Build the trenches! Dolphins adding guard Connor Williams

Joe Schad

The Dolphins are adding left guard Connor Williams from the Dallas Cowboys.

Williams should be a key component as Miami attempts to augment a woeful and underperforming offensive line unit.

Williams, 24, has already started 51 NFL games since he was selected in the second round out of the University of Texas.

He will join the Dolphins on a 2-year deal.

Williams has experience in the zone-blocking scheme new coach Mike McDaniel plans to implement. Williams, 6-foot-5, 298 pounds, moves well.

Known as a solid run blocker, Williams was the fifth-best pass-blocking guard in the NFL over the last five weeks of 2021, according to Pro Football Focus.

Williams was graded as the 11th-best guard in the NFL by PFF last season. Miami's top-graded guards were Robert Hunt, 36th, and Austin Jackson, 76th.

In an ideal situation, perhaps Jackson is not counted on as a starter, but is able to try to regain his confidence and status as a potential reserve at tackle and guard.

The Dolphins still need to resolve their tackle situation. It's possible Miami may be comfortable with Liam Eichenberg at right tackle, or they could slide guard Robert Hunt to that position.

But accomplished veteran left tackles like Terron Armstead and Eric Fisher had not yet agreed to free-agent deals as of Tuesday morning. And Williams' teammate in Dallas, right tackle La'el Collins, may soon be cut.

Williams can play offensive tackle in a pinch, as he did so in college. When he entered the NFL Draft, scouting reports suggested he was a hard worker and team leader.

Williams is said to be smooth and efficient in his movements. Williams was charged with only one sack last season, though he did commit 15 penalties, which was much higher than his previous seasons.
